Kaarea took part in a demolition pilot aimed at advancing the circular economy

Kaarea participated in an important pilot in which an industrial building was carefully dismantled, enabling the reuse of building components. The project is part of the joint Circular Science Park initiative of Turku University of Applied Sciences and the City of Turku and was carried out in cooperation with the City of Turku and VS Purku Oy. Kaarea acted as the client for the demolition work. The aim of the pilot was to develop responsible demolition practices that support the circular economy and reduce construction waste. The project focused on understanding the phases of intact dismantling, evaluating the costs and benefits of the process, and, in the long term, enabling the development of markets for the reuse of building components.

The pilot included a comprehensive reuse assessment, preparation of product datasheets, and sample testing of components. Roof tiles, sawn timber, and spiral staircases were selected for intact dismantling. The demolition contract was tendered to five demolition companies, who were also asked to provide feedback during the bidding phase. The demolition was carried out in late 2024, and the dismantled components were stored for future use. After the process, the procedures and lessons learned were discussed together with the demolition company.

The pilot was a success and a great learning experience for future projects. Many materials suitable for reuse were identified, while several areas requiring new operational models or additional testing were also recognised.

We are committed to responsibility and sustainable development. Intact dismantling supports a circular construction economy, giving materials a new life and reducing environmental impact.
