Kaarea celebrates Baltic Sea Day by serving Baltic Sea fish patties

Baltic Sea Day will be celebrated on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Kaarea Food Services is taking part in the celebration of our unique local sea by featuring fish patties made from Baltic Sea fish on the day’s menu. The aim of the day is to inspire people to enjoy the Baltic Sea and take concrete action to protect it.

Coordinated by the John Nurminen Foundation, Baltic Sea Day is an annual celebration of the Baltic Sea held on the last Thursday of August. The day is marked across the Baltic Sea region with events, campaigns, and everyday actions. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the Baltic Sea’s natural environment, culture, and history and to remind us that everyone contributes to the health of the Baltic Sea through their own choices.

For Kaarea, taking part in Baltic Sea Day is a natural way to highlight locally sourced food, responsible food choices, and the importance of protecting our local environment. Kaarea operates across a region stretching from the archipelago to the banks of the Aura River, making the Baltic Sea part of our shared environment.

On Baltic Sea Day, as many as 112,500 fish patties will be served at Kaarea sites, and catching Baltic herring also removes phosphorus from the sea, helping reduce eutrophication, says Jarkko Malmberg, Product Planner with Kaarea Food Services.

Choosing finnish fish is one practical way to support the Baltic Sea. By eating fish caught in the Baltic Sea, nutrients that contribute to eutrophication are removed from the sea at the same time. The day also offers an opportunity to discover the Baltic Sea through food and reflect on how what we eat affects the health of the environment.

Kaarea encourages everyone to celebrate Baltic Sea Day in their own way — for example, by enjoying locally sourced fish, spending time by the water, or making a small promise to help protect the Baltic Sea. Together, small actions can add up to make a real difference.
